The National Endowment for the Arts has taken a leadership role in supporting jazz artists and organizations since 1970, providing millions of dollars in grants and awards. NEA jazz programming has grown significantly in recent years to include an expansion of the NEA Jazz Masters programs as well as broadcast initiatives, musical recordings, publications, and research. The NEA Jazz in the Schools program continues the NEA’s enhancement of its jazz programs, investing in jazz education to help reconnect young people to a defining American art form.

The National Endowment for the Arts and Jazz at Lincoln Center have created these new materials to introduce you to the captivating sounds and stories of jazz and to build important connections for your students between the music and our nation’s history.

Bebop and Modernism

From Swing to Bop

(Racism)

PBS http://www.pbs.org/jazz/exchange/exchange_recording_ban.htm

On August 1, 1942, the American Federation of Musicians ordered its members to stop making records — other than the “V discs” intended only for servicemen — until the record companies agreed to pay them each time their music was played in jukeboxes or on the radio. The Capitol and Decca record companies settled within a year, but heavyweights Victor and Columbia held out. It would be more than two years before the issue was fully settled and musicians could return to the studios.

Ironically, just as the record ban began, saxophonist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie had just found their way into uncharted jazz territory. They were wowing small groups of listeners with their innovative new sound, but because of the record ban, only their collaborators and a few dedicated fans would hear the music they had created, which came to be known as bebop.

    ลองฟัง Take Six Acappella ดูครับ

It’s don’t mean a thing

1942–44 musicians’ strike

    4. การเหยียดสีผิว (Racism)

    ยังคงมีอยู่ โดยนักดนตรีผิวสี ได้ค่าจ้างน้อยกว่า ถ้าวงคนขาวคนไหนรับนักดนตรีผิวสีเข้ามาก็ยังคงโดนดูถูก

    ในขณะนั้น นักดนตรีชาวแอฟริกัน-อเมริกัน African-American เองก็อยากจะสร้างสรรค์ดนตรีในแบบของตัวเอง เพราะเขามองว่า สวิง หรือ บิ๊กแบนด์ เองเป็นของคนขาว หรือ European-American เขาก็อยากจะมีเพลงที่ไม่ใช่เพื่อ Entertain อย่างเดียว แต่เป็น ศิลปะ (Bebop is true African American ART form)

    Bebop Philosophy

    Bebop = ART, not “entertainment” และบางคนก็จะเรียกว่าเป็น จุดกำเนิดของ Modern Jazz อีกเรื่องนึง คือ Bebop เป็นสิ่งที่คนแอฟริกัน-อเมริกัน ทำขึ้นเองทั้งหมด โดยไม่ไมีคนขาวเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้อง

    Performance Style

    – วงเล็ก มักมีห้าชิ้น trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, กลอง
    – ไม่ค่อยมี arrangement เน้นแต่ Improvisation
    – เพลงยากแสดงทักษะของผู้เล่น
    – trimmed down คือลดทอน arrangement เพลงยุคนี้จะไม่มีท่อนกลาง บางทีก็ไม่มี Intro, background, coda จนมันห้วนๆ นี่ล่ะ
    – basic format เริ่มจากเล่น Head จนจบเนื้อ – middle chrouses โซโล่กันไปจนน่วม หลายรอบมากๆ ยาวเท่าที่ใจอยาก – trading four/eight ถ้าไม่หนำใจก็สลับกันเล่นคนละ 4 หรือ 8 ห้องกับกลอง แล้ววนไปตั้งแต่คนโซโล่คนแรกยันคนสุดท้าย – Head out เล่นเพลงเพื่อให้คนดูอ๋อ มันคือเพลงนี้นะ นั่นแหละครับ
    – ลักษณะของเครื่องดนตรี จะเล่น ช่วงเสียงกว้าง ตัวต่ำสุดก็ต่ำมาก สูงก็สูงสุดๆ อย่าง Dizzy Gillespie เพื่อแสดง virtuosity
    – กรณีของร้องก็จะเป็น Scat

    Improtant Figure บุคคลสำคัญ

    Kenny Clarke, drums
    Ella Fitzgerald, vocal
    Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet
    J.J. Johnson, trombone
    Thelonious Monk, piano
    Charlie Parker (“Bird”), alto saxophone
    Max Roach, drums
    Clark Terry, trumpet

    Bebop and Modernism

    จากเวบไซต์ http://neajazzintheschools.org/lesson3/index.php?uv=s

    มาถึงตอนนี้กล่าวได้ว่า “Swing” เป็นเครื่องจรรโลงและช่วยให้คนที่ได้ฟังและได้เล่นมัน หนี ออกจากความเป็นจริงอันโหดร้าย แต่ “Bebop” เป็นสิ่งสะท้อนความกังวลและความไม่แน่นอนที่คนแอฟริกัน-อเมริกันต้องเผชิญ

New York, specifically photo Harlem, was the indisputable capital of bebop, and the early practitioners of this new music were mostly young blacks who had migrated to New York from the South and Southwest, drawn by the allure of Harlem’s celebrated African-American arts scene. They were virtuosos on their instruments, and they saw themselves not as talent hired to make dance music, but as true artists driven by their own aesthetic vision. By refusing to play the traditional role of smiling entertainer, they became forerunners of the civil rights struggle of the 1960s.

By the late 1940s, the music of Parker and Gillespie, as well as that of fellow innovators like pianist listen Bud Powell, pianist-composer listen Thelonious Monk, and drummers photo Kenny Clarke and photo Max Roach, had inspired musicians, fans, and critics to question the very definition of jazz. Bebop musicians considered innovation and the reshaping of traditional forms to be the very heart of jazz, and it didn’t take long for other musicians to embrace this new ethic. Between 1949 and 1959, several new jazz styles emerged, each in its own way a response to the changes pioneered in bebop. A respect for earlier forms coexisted happily with a desire to create utterly new styles. All along 52nd Street, established names like listen Coleman Hawkins, listen Billie Holiday, listen Art Tatum, and listen Sidney Bechet performed alongside emerging talents like listen Miles Davis, listen Gerry Mulligan, and the wholly original pianist Erroll Garner, who would become one of the biggest jazz stars of the 1950s. Jazz was quickly becoming as diverse as America itself, reflecting the class, ethnic, and regional tastes and aspirations of a new generation. The eclecticism being cultivated by jazz musicians during these years would soon become the music’s defining trait.

    นอกจากฮอกกิ้นแล้ว Gerry Mulligan, ซึ่งเป็นนักแซกโซโฟน ก็ได้เรียบเรียงเพลงสำหรับวงขนาด 9 ชิ้นครับ เรียกว่า Little Bigband วงที่ผมเล่นประจำ JRP ก็อยุ่ใน format นี้ครับ อ่านต่อที่ สนุกสนานกับ วง JRP Little Bigband ปัจจุบันวงในสไตล์นี้มักเป็นวงสไตล์ Entertainer ครับ ลองดูวง Tiny Little Bigband ดูครับ สนุกดี

Tiny Little Bigband – I ain’t got nobody

    Modernism

ขึ้นมาด้วย นอกจากนี้ยังมีคำอื่นๆ อีกหลายคำ ลองอ่าน more info The Problem with Names

The very nature of jazz—a music built on both borrowing and reinvention—makes assigning names problematic.

    Jazz Comes into its own

In 1956, North Texas State College became the first school in the country to offer a major in dance band music, and in 1957, the Lennox School of Jazz in Massachusetts was established as a private summer school to bring together students, scholars, and established jazz musicians in the classroom and on the bandstand. Within 10 years or so, jazz courses were being offered in a number of universities. Some hired famous musicians—Max Roach, for example, who taught at the University of Massachusetts—as professors.

The best jazz curriculum in the country was not to be found in a classroom, however. If you wanted a crash course in almost every type of jazz, your best bet was to wait for summer and find your way to the wealthy seaside town of Newport, Rhode Island. It was here that George Wein, the owner of the Storyville jazz club in Boston, put on the first outdoor jazz festival in 1954.
