How to play MUSIC

This is my short-note about his master class:

Play music = Link another people, Fun,
Play scale = Bank saving

Most important parameter for playing music

1. Sound
2. Rhythm
3. Melody
4. Harmony
5. Artistry

These elements make me think about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs chart.

maslow hierarchy

maslow hierarchy

In my opinion (PLAJAZZ). So we can apply that as sound is the must for playing. No one want to hear bad sound, Right? This is requirement of music, After you get good sound, next you should play on time and groove it! Then song is played, people know the song by melody. Harmony can be vary as substitution to be guideline for solo. Finally, with combination of those….ART

Note: in Thai please read Pantip: ทฤษฎีลำดับขั้นความต้องการของ Maslow

Play by learning from drum.
Learn from another instrument.
Learn from standard jazz song.

Concept of Improvisation

S P A C E . . . just start from space, nothing. breath when you solo. like talk should be in phrasing…when we improv, it’s like we don’t know what happen, but we use melody and harmony as GPS to navigate jazz musician.

Nic Thys play bass, so he think like bass line is ‘counter melody’ in response to front line (horn section).

European Jazz

European Jazz does not copy from American, but learn from American culture. Dig in American jazz element such as play-in-2 came from ‘second line’ in new orleans when bass drum play on 1,3 and cymbol play 2,4 as answer. Another is Just Blues. Nic really like Blues as it tell the story and emotion.

Q&A: As student, how to deal w bombardon of information??

Not block or judge info, Open yourself, Accept them and filter what you want. Btw, not decide to reject too soon.

Note: when Nic was young he memorize only one thing from his interesting workshop. Speaker draw picture contain 3 letters:

‘f#’-“G”-‘ab’

it means in jazz when we want to play “G” note. In Jazz, we just go to ‘F#’ then ‘Ab’ before go to “G”. then he play in Bach approach and jazz approach.

Nicolas Thys, born and raised in Brussels, Belgium, lived in Amsterdam for a while, in NYC since 1999. back in Brussels and loving it-since january 2007;-) play mainly electric and acoustic bass(jazz, soul and groove stuff)…i played with a lot of different people featured on about 50 different recordings. from Mal Waldron to zap mama, lee konitz to brazilian girls, bill carrothers to mark turner …blah..blah..

from Zéro DB – Blog

Zéro DB, directed by Aurélien Bodinaux, follows Nic Thys in New York and Brussels as he works on and records a composition called “Circles.” He composed it 15 years ago, but didn’t do much with it at the time and it was never performed, or even titled.

This is what he said in his philosophy of music. He think music just come from silence and back to silence as the circle. So 0dB is mean silence (actually it is the minimum sound pressure that man can hear, 20 micropascal). Anyway this is not science but just art. ^_^
